From Bali to the Gili Islands, the fast boat is the direct route and the flight via Lombok avoids the long open-sea crossing. A fast boat from Padang Bai crosses in roughly an hour and a half, according to travel guides, and depends on the sea. Flying means a short flight to Lombok, a drive of well over an hour and a half, and a short boat. Each takes most of a day door to door.
The two routes
The Gili Islands lie off the northwest coast of Lombok, the island east of Bali, and a traveler has two ways to reach them. One is by sea the whole way, on a fast boat from Bali. The other is by air to Lombok's international airport, then by road to the harbor area at Bangsal, then by a short boat.
Why neither is fast
The crossing or the flight is the short part of either route. The rest is getting to a port or an airport, waiting, and getting from the far end to your hotel. We give no total door-to-door times, since they depend on your base and the day. Plan on the journey taking most of a day either way.
The fast boat
Fast boats run from several points on Bali. Travel guides name Padang Bai, in East Bali, as the main port, with a crossing of roughly an hour and a half. Boats from the south of the island take longer, around two and a half hours by the same guides, and Amed, on the northeast coast, has the shortest sea route.
Getting to the port
Padang Bai is about 35 miles from the airport by road, about 32 from Seminyak and about 23 from Ubud. From the southern resorts, the drive to the port is a journey in itself and usually starts early. Many operators sell a ticket that includes a hotel pickup; confirm the pickup time and place in writing.
What the crossing is like
Travel guides describe the boats as small high-speed craft, and the route crosses the open strait between Bali and Lombok. Travel guides describe the sea as roughest in July and August, when swells are strongest. Anyone prone to seasickness should prepare for it.
What travel guides warn about
Travel guides are direct on safety. They note that crew training and safety standards vary considerably between operators, and they advise travelers who have concerns about the vessel, the operator, overloading or the weather not to board. They also advise against crossing at night. We name no operators.
Flying via Lombok
The air route replaces the open-sea crossing with a short flight and a drive. You fly from Bali to Lombok's international airport, drive across the island to the harbor area at Bangsal or Teluk Nare, and take a short boat to the islands. Travel guides put the drive at about an hour and forty minutes to two hours.
What it involves
This route has more stages: a drive to Bali's airport, a check-in, the flight, baggage reclaim, the drive, and the boat. Each stage is ordinary, and together they fill the day. The final boat is a much shorter crossing than the one between Bali and Lombok.
Baggage on the flight
A domestic flight has its own baggage rules. According to Indonesian press reporting on the Transport Ministry's regulation, a full-service airline includes up to 20 kilograms of checked baggage, a medium-service airline up to 15, and a no-frills airline may charge for it. Check the fare before buying, and weigh your bags.
