On departure day, leave for Bali's airport earlier than the distance suggests. The airport is only about 12 miles from Canggu and about 22 miles from the airport to Ubud, and the drive passes through the busiest roads on the island. Work backward from your airline's check-in deadline, add a live-map estimate for your actual hour, and then add a margin on top.

How to work out your leaving time

The time to leave for Bali's airport is built from three numbers: when your airline wants you at check-in, how long the drive takes at that hour, and a margin for what a map cannot see. We give none of the three as a fixed figure, because the first is your airline's and the second changes by the hour.

Start from the airline

Your airline sets the check-in and bag-drop deadlines for an international flight, and they are on your booking or its website. Use the airline's own recommended arrival time as the starting point. A long-haul international departure with checked bags is the case that needs the most time at the airport.

Add the drive

Check a live map for the drive from your accommodation to the airport, set to the hour and the day of the week you will be traveling. Do it the day before. A drive that looks short at 10 in the morning can look very different in the late afternoon.

Add a margin

Our advice is to add a generous margin on top of the map's estimate, and to make it larger the further you are from the airport. A live estimate knows about traffic now. It does not know about a procession, a downpour or an accident an hour from now.

How far the airport is

Bali's airport sits on the narrow neck of land in the south, and most bases are within a short distance in miles. By road it is about 4 miles from Kuta, 7 from Seminyak, 8 from Nusa Dua, 11 from Sanur, 12 from Canggu and 13 from Uluwatu. Ubud is about 22 miles away.

Further bases

From the east and the north the drive is a journey in itself. The port of Padang Bai is about 35 miles from the airport, Munduk about 51, and Amed about 61. A flight home on the same day as a drive from one of those needs a very early start, or a different plan.

What can go wrong on the way

The road to Bali's airport is exposed to the same delays as every other road on the island, with the difference that this drive has a deadline. The State Department notes that Indonesia's roads are shared with many motorcycles. Rain slows traffic, and a ceremony can close a road for a period.

Rainy season

South Bali's climate record shows about 13 to 14 inches of rain a month in December and January. A departure in the wet months deserves a bigger margin than one in July or August. Our advice is to treat the wet-season afternoon as the slowest case and plan for it.

Nyepi

One date needs checking before any other. Nyepi, the day of silence, falls on Monday, March 8, 2027, and press reports of the airport operator's 2026 announcement describe regular flights halting for 24 hours that year. The 2027 arrangements had not been announced when we wrote this, so our advice is to avoid a departure on or next to that date and to confirm with your airline.

Arranging the ride

The ride to the airport should be the most firmly booked journey of the trip. Our advice is to arrange it the day before with a driver or through your accommodation, to confirm the pickup time in writing, and to have the driver's phone number. An app ride requested at the last minute is a gamble on that one morning.

Use someone you know

A driver you have already used during the trip has shown up on time before. That record is worth more than a small saving. If you rely on a ride app, check for available cars well before you need to leave, and have a taxi as the fallback.

If you returned a scooter

Travelers who rented a scooter should return it the day before the flight, not on the morning. That leaves time to settle any question about its condition without a plane to catch.

At the airport

Leaving Indonesia is simpler than entering it, and two rules still apply. You must leave on the same passport you entered with; the State Department says a replaced passport needs a special pass from immigration before departure. And your stay must be inside the visa's limit, since overstaying is charged at IDR 1,000,000 per day.

Cash on the way out

Taking rupiah worth IDR 100,000,000 or more out of Indonesia requires a permit from Bank Indonesia, a threshold well above what a vacationer carries. The practical matter is leftover small notes: our advice is to spend them or change them before you leave Indonesia.

Liquids and souvenirs

Anything you bring home has to enter the United States under American rules. The State Department notes that counterfeit and pirated goods may have to be surrendered or may bring fines on return, and that medicine bought abroad must meet US requirements.

What this decision actually sits inside

Notice what happened across all of this. The hour you leave for the airport was decided days earlier, by where you chose to spend the last night. A final night near the airport makes departure day short and dull. A final night in the hills or on another island makes it long and tense. The leaving time is an output of the itinerary, not a separate choice.

How the last night, the last full day and the flight fit together is worked through in Bali, in Its Own Time.

FAQ

How early should I leave for Bali airport?

Start from your airline's check-in deadline, add a live-map drive time for your actual hour, and add a generous margin. We give no fixed figure because drive times vary.

How far is Seminyak from Bali airport?

About 7 miles by road.

Can I fly out of Bali on Nyepi?

Press reports of the 2026 arrangements describe regular flights halting for 24 hours. The 2027 arrangements were not yet announced when we wrote this, so avoid that date if you can and confirm with your airline.

Should I stay near the airport on my last night?

It makes departure day easier. The further your last night is from the airport, the larger the margin you need.
