When a fast boat from the Nusa or Gili islands is cancelled, your options are to wait for the next sailing, to switch to another operator or port, or, from Lombok, to fly. None of them is quick. The protection is a buffer: keep at least one full day, and better two, between your boat back to Bali and your flight home. Boats on these routes depend on the sea.

Why boats are cancelled

Fast boats around Bali are small craft crossing open water, and weather is the documented reason for stopping them. Indonesia's state news agency reports that the harbor master's office for the Sanur route issues a sailing approval for each departure and has told operators not to send boats out when conditions are poor, pointing them to the meteorological agency's wave forecasts.

What counts as poor conditions

The state news agency reported in May 2023 that waves of 2.5 to 4 meters were forecast in the Badung Strait, which the Sanur to Nusa Penida route crosses, and that waves above 2.5 meters put boats on this route at risk. A cancellation in those conditions is the system working as intended.

Why you want them to cancel

The same agency reported that in August 2025 a fast boat arriving from Nusa Penida capsized in the entrance to Sanur harbor after being hit by a large wave, and that two passengers died. Forecast waves that day were 2 to 4 meters. A cancelled boat is an inconvenience; the alternative is worse.

How often it happens

We have no official source on how often boats to the Nusa or Gili islands are cancelled, and we will not invent a rate. Travel guides describe sea conditions between Bali and Lombok as worst in July and August, when swells are strongest.

The dry season is not the calm season

A first-time visitor tends to assume that the dry season means good boating weather. Rain and swell are separate things. South Bali's driest months, July and August, are the months travel guides single out for the roughest crossings, and the 2025 accident at Sanur happened in August.

Plan for more than a few hours

Our caution is that sea conditions do not always clear overnight, which is why we do not count a single afternoon as a buffer. Our advice is to plan as though a cancellation could cost you a full day, and to be pleased when it does not.

Your options when a boat is cancelled

A cancelled boat leaves three practical choices, and which is open to you depends on where you are. From the Nusa islands, the only way back is by sea. From the Gili Islands, the sea route to Bali can be replaced by a short boat to Lombok, a drive and a flight.

Wait

The first option is to wait for the next sailing that the harbor authority allows. Ask the operator when that is likely, and ask your accommodation whether you can keep the room. Waiting costs time and possibly an extra night's accommodation, which is why the buffer matters: with spare days in hand, waiting is the simplest choice.

Switch boat or port

The second option is another operator or another route. We have no official source on how operators handle each other's passengers, so we describe no practice. Travel guides mention a slower vehicle ferry between Nusa Penida and Padang Bai; whether it is running is a question for the day.

Fly, from Lombok

From the Gili Islands, the alternative is to cross the short stretch of water to Lombok, drive to Lombok's airport and fly to Bali. Travel guides put the drive at well over an hour and a half. It is a separate domestic booking with its own baggage rules, and seats on the day are not guaranteed.

What happens to your ticket

We have no official source on refund or rebooking rules for cancelled boats, and operators set their own terms. Ask before you buy what happens if the crossing does not run: whether the ticket moves to the next sailing, whether you can have the money back, and how to reach the operator on the day.

Insurance

Check what your travel insurance says about delays and missed connections caused by cancelled boats. Policies differ a great deal on this point, and some exclude delays on separately booked transport. The State Department highly recommends travel insurance for Indonesia. Ask the question in writing before you travel, and keep the ticket and any cancellation message.

The buffer you need

The buffer is the time between your return boat and anything you cannot miss. Our advice is at least one full day between the boat back to Bali and an international flight, and two days in July and August or in the wet season. That is our own margin, not an official rule.

Why one day and not a few hours

A boat landing at Sanur at midday and a flight that evening looks comfortable on paper. It assumes the morning boat ran. If it did not, the next one may be the following morning, and the drive from Sanur to the airport, about 11 miles, is the least of your problems.

How to lower the odds

A traveler cannot control the sea and can still improve the odds. These are our own suggestions: take a morning boat, since a cancelled morning sailing leaves the afternoon as a fallback; check the forecast with the operator the evening before; and avoid boarding any boat you have doubts about.

Do not pressure the operator

The harbor authority's message to operators, as reported, was not to force a departure in poor weather. Passengers with flights to catch are part of that pressure. If the boat is not going, accept it. Travel guides give the same advice from the other side: if you have concerns about the vessel, overloading or the weather, do not board.

What this decision actually sits inside

Notice what happened across all of this. The options after a cancellation were all poor, and the real protection was decided weeks earlier, when the island nights were placed in the itinerary. An island leg at the end of a trip turns every swell into a threat to the flight home. The same leg in the middle turns a cancellation into an extra day at the beach.

How to place the island leg, the buffer and the departure for your own dates is worked through in Bali, in Its Own Time.
