Canggu, Seminyak, Legian and Kuta: One Coast, Four Different Stays
Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Canggu share one west-facing beach and feel like four different trips. What each is like, who it suits, and how far apart they are.
Editorial Written and checked for American travelers
Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Canggu are four neighboring areas on one stretch of Bali's west-facing coast, running north from the airport in that order. Kuta is the most developed and the closest to the airport, Legian sits between Kuta and Seminyak, Seminyak is the more upscale area for dining and villas, and Canggu is the newer, fast-developing surf area with rice paddies behind it.
One coast, four areas
The four areas share a single long beach facing west, and they blend into one another on the ground. Measured by road from the airport, Kuta is about 4 miles away, Seminyak about 7 and Canggu about 12. Legian lies between Kuta and Seminyak. The whole strip is inside Badung regency.
Map: Kuta Beach, Legian Beach, Seminyak Beach, Canggu (Batu Bolong Beach).
What they have in common
All four face the sunset, all four have surf, and all four are busy. Surf guides describe this west-facing coast as best in the dry season, from about April to October, when the trade winds blow offshore. In Badung, the local tax on restaurant food and drink and on hotel stays is 10%.
What separates them
The difference between the four is character and price level, not geography. Travel guides place them on a line from the most developed and budget-oriented at the Kuta end to the more upscale at Seminyak, with Canggu as the fast-growing newcomer to the north. Which one suits you depends on what you want within walking distance.
Kuta
Kuta is the original beach resort of Bali and the closest to the airport. Travel guides describe it as by far the most heavily developed area on the island, with a great deal of shopping and nightlife. It is the practical choice for a first or last night, at about 4 miles from the terminal.
Who Kuta suits
Kuta suits travelers who want low prices, a lively scene and a short transfer. Our view is that it is the least distinctive of the four for a longer stay, since much of it could be a resort strip anywhere. Travelers looking for quiet or for Balinese atmosphere will be happier elsewhere.
Legian
Legian is the stretch of beach between Kuta and Seminyak, and it works as a middle ground between them. Travel guides describe it as a popular beach town and a good place to learn to surf, with lessons offered on the beach. It is close enough to both neighbors to reach either on a short ride.
Who Legian suits
Legian suits beginners who want surf lessons on a sandy beach and travelers who want to be near Kuta's energy without being in the middle of it. Our advice to a first-time surfer is to book a lesson with a school and let the instructor choose the spot and the hour.
Seminyak
Seminyak is the upscale end of the strip. Travel guides describe it as quieter than Kuta, with more upmarket beachside resorts and villas, sophisticated dining and fashionable bars. It is about 7 miles from the airport. Much of what visitors picture as stylish Bali, in the form of restaurants, shops and spas, is here.
Who Seminyak suits
Seminyak suits couples and groups who want good restaurants, shopping and a beach within a short walk, and who are comfortable with resort prices. It has less surf culture than Canggu and less nightlife chaos than Kuta. Our view is that it is the easiest of the four for a first visit.
Bills in Seminyak
Restaurant and hotel prices here are often quoted before additions. The local tax is 10%, and a service charge may be added separately by the business. Bars and nightclubs fall under a higher entertainment tax category that was set at 40% in the regency's 2023 regulations; that rate was contested and may have changed, so read how a venue states its prices.
Canggu
Canggu lies north of Seminyak, about 12 miles from the airport. Travel guides describe it as an area of black sand beaches, surfing and rice paddies that is developing rapidly. Its draw is surf and a newer, less built-up setting than Seminyak.
Who Canggu suits
Our view is that Canggu suits surfers and longer-stay visitors. The beaches are black sand, and the sea is a surf beach.
Canggu's position
Canggu is the furthest of the four from the airport and from the Bukit peninsula: Uluwatu is about 23 miles away by road. It is the closest to the sea temple of Tanah Lot, about 7 miles up the coast. Ubud is about 19 miles inland.
Getting between them
The four areas are close together in miles and slow to move between. Kuta to Seminyak is about 4 miles and Seminyak to Canggu about 7. We give no drive times, because they change by the hour. Check a live map before planning dinner in one area and a hotel in another.
How to move
Ride apps are the simplest way to travel along the strip. The State Department notes that Grab and Gojek show the fare in the app before you confirm. A scooter is common here and legal only for a rider who holds a license matching the type of vehicle driven.
Walking
Within each area, the beach itself is the pleasant walking route. Our advice is to choose accommodation by what is around it on foot, since a place that looks central on a map can be a ride away from everything you came for.
Staying safe on the strip
The busy south is where the State Department's general cautions for Indonesia apply most directly. It describes pickpocketing and snatch-and-grab robberies as common and advises being mindful of phones near roadways. It also reports drink spiking in Bali and advises watching drinks being prepared and never leaving one unattended.
The sea
This is an open surf coast. We have no official source on currents or lifeguard coverage at each beach, so we state none. Our advice is to swim only where lifeguard flags mark a safe area, and to treat any unflagged stretch as a surf beach, not a swimming beach.
