Yes. A US passport holder needs a visa to enter Bali, and for a vacation it is an easy one to get: you buy it online before you fly or at the airport when you land. What catches Americans out is rarely the visa itself. The trouble comes from the passport rules and from two other things you have to do that are not the visa at all.
The short answer for US passport holders
Americans visiting Bali as tourists need a visa, and the one that fits a normal vacation is Indonesia's B1 tourist visa, widely called the visa on arrival. The State Department puts it plainly: a visa is required. A US traveler can buy it online in advance or at the airport on arrival, and both routes produce the same visa.
Bali is a province of Indonesia, so everything here is Indonesian immigration law. There is no separate "Bali visa": the visa you need is the national Indonesian one.
What the visa lets you do
The B1 visa covers tourism, visiting friends or family, business meetings and medical treatment. It does not cover work: selling goods or services, or being paid by anyone in Indonesia, is prohibited. Paid work is not allowed on this visa, and the US Consular Agency reports a current enforcement campaign in Bali that includes visa violations.
What the Bali visa costs and how long it lasts
The Indonesian tourist visa for Americans costs IDR 500,000, set in rupiah, so the dollar amount on your card statement moves with the exchange rate on the day you pay. The visa gives a stay of 30 days, extendable once for another 30 days.
Thirty days is counted, not rounded
Thirty days is not "a month", and the penalty for getting it wrong is steep: overstaying can bring a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day, along with possible detention, deportation or a ban on coming back. If your trip runs close to the limit, count the days on a calendar and build in a margin.
Staying longer than 30 days
If you want more time, you extend once, for another 30 days. The official fee for that extension is IDR 500,000 per application. Start the process well before your first 30 days run out. An expired visa is an overstay, whatever your intentions were.
Buying the visa online or at the airport
American travelers can buy the Bali visa on Indonesia's official e-visa website before departure, or pay for it at the visa counter in the airport before reaching immigration. The State Department notes that the airport route can mean long lines. Buying online moves that step to your kitchen table, which matters most after twenty-plus hours of travel.
The online route
The official site is run by Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration. You pay by Visa, Mastercard or JCB card, and one application can cover up to five travelers, which helps families. Once issued, the visa is good for entry for 90 days, so there is no reason to leave it to the last week. You will be asked for your departure date and a booked return flight.
Use the official address only. Search results for this visa also show agencies that charge a service fee for filling in the same form.
Passport rules that turn Americans away
A US passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date and have 2 blank pages to enter Bali. The US Consular Agency in Bali is blunt about it: immigration will not let you in otherwise. A visa does not fix a short passport.
The blank-page detail people miss
The endorsement pages at the back of a US passport do not count as blank pages. If your passport is nearly full, count the visa pages only. Check this before you book anything, while there is still time to renew.
Emergency passports
The visa on arrival is not available to a traveler on a limited-validity emergency passport. In that case you need a visa obtained before arrival from an Indonesian embassy or consulate. This mostly affects people who lose a passport shortly before the trip and get a quick replacement.
What immigration asks to see
Beyond the passport, the officer can ask for an outbound ticket from Indonesia. Have the booking on your phone and, ideally, on paper. You must also leave Indonesia on the same passport you entered with, which matters to dual nationals who carry two.
Two things that are not the visa
Getting into Bali takes three separate steps, and the visa is only the first. Indonesia also requires an arrival card from every traveler, and Bali charges its own tourist levy. Each is handled through its own official system, and paying for one does not cover the others.
The arrival card
Every traveler completes an arrival card through Indonesia's All Indonesia system. It is free, it produces a QR code that you show to immigration and customs, and the form only opens shortly before you travel: fill it in during the last two days before you land.
The Bali tourist levy
Bali charges foreign visitors a levy of IDR 150,000 per person, separate from the visa and paid cashless. It has its own rules and its own website, covered in our guide to the Bali tourist levy.
What this decision actually sits inside
Notice what happened across all of this. The visa question looked like a single form, and the answer turned out to be a stack: a visa, a passport test, an arrival card and a levy, run by different offices with different deadlines. Each one is easy. What goes wrong is the sequence: some steps cannot be done early, and one has to be settled months ahead, when you renew a passport.
The same stack also fixes the outer edge of your trip: how many days you can stay, and what proof of leaving you must already hold when you arrive. That ordering, from passport check to landing, is laid out step by step in Bali, in Its Own Time, next to the other connected decisions a first trip turns on.
