The best layover city for Bali is the one that leaves a short final flight and enough time to make it. Since no airline flies nonstop from the United States, the hub is a real choice. Singapore is the closest large hub, at about three and a half hours from Bali; Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei and Hong Kong sit on the direct Pacific path; Dubai, Doha and Istanbul serve the eastern United States.

What makes a good layover city

A good layover city for a Bali trip does three things: it puts you on a short final flight, it gives you a sensible amount of time between flights, and it does not add much distance. The US Department of Transportation's advice on connections is to check the time between flights and to ask what happens if the first flight is delayed.

The Department of Transportation's criteria

The Department of Transportation suggests that when fares and service are equivalent, a traveler should choose the least-congested connecting airport, so that it is easier to reach the second flight, and should consider the potential for bad weather at the connecting city. Those two tests apply to an Asian hub as much as to a domestic one.

Time between flights

We give no minimum connection time in minutes, because it differs by airport and airline and we have no official figure for each hub. Our advice is to prefer a connection that would still work if your first flight landed an hour late, and to treat anything tighter as a risk you are choosing to take.

The hubs, by distance from Bali

Schedule data for Bali's airport from October 2026 lists nonstop flights from a dozen large hubs. The flight times below are the approximate ones on that schedule, and they describe the second leg of the journey, the one after your long flight. Routes change by season, so check your own dates.

Singapore

Singapore is about three and a half hours from Bali, and the schedule shows several airlines on the route. A short final leg served by several airlines leaves more ways to continue if a connection is missed. The cost is a very long first flight from the United States to Singapore.

Hong Kong and Taipei

Hong Kong and Taipei are each roughly five to six hours from Bali on that schedule. Both lie near the straight line between the US West Coast and Indonesia.

Tokyo and Seoul

Tokyo and Seoul are roughly seven to eight hours from Bali. They make the Pacific crossing shorter and the second leg longer, which splits the journey more evenly. Check how many flights a day run on the route for your dates, since that decides your options if a connection is missed.

Dubai, Doha and Istanbul

Dubai and Doha are about ten hours from Bali, and Istanbul about 13. These hubs suit travelers from the East Coast and the Midwest, for whom flying east is not much longer than flying west. The journey becomes two long flights, with the layover near the midpoint.

Staying inside the airport or going out

A layover is either a transit or a visit, and the difference is whether you pass through immigration. A traveler who stays in the terminal is in transit. A traveler who leaves the airport is entering that country, and its entry rules apply. Check the State Department's page for the layover country before planning to go out.

Passport rules in two countries

Your passport has to satisfy Indonesia in any case: it must be valid for 6 months beyond your arrival date and have 2 blank pages. If you enter the layover country as well, its own validity and blank-page rules apply on top, and an entry stamp there uses part of a page.

Bags on a long layover

The Department of Transportation's advice on any connection involving two airlines is to ask whether your bags will be transferred. Ask the same question about a long layover on one airline, since a checked bag may or may not be held through to Bali. Know the answer before you decide what to carry on.

Breaking the journey on purpose

A layover can be extended into a stopover of a night or two, which turns the hardest part of the trip into a short visit. The CDC's advice on jet lag is to arrive at least two days before any important event so the body can adjust. A stopover puts part of that adjustment in a city you might enjoy.

When a stopover makes sense

Our view is that a stopover is worth considering on a trip of two weeks or more, where a night in the hub costs a small share of the holiday. On a one-week trip the same night is a seventh of your time, and most travelers will prefer to push through to Bali.

Duty-free purchases at the hub

Anything you buy at the layover airport enters Indonesia under the same allowances as what you packed at home. An adult may bring 1 liter of alcohol, and any excess is destroyed on the spot by the customs officer. Buy with that limit in mind.

How to choose for your home airport

Choosing a layover city starts from where you live. From the West Coast, the hubs of East Asia are on the way. From the East Coast and the Midwest, both directions are possible, and the Gulf or Istanbul may be as quick as the Pacific. Compare the total journey time your search shows for each, on your dates.

Our short list of questions

These are our own suggestions for comparing two routings.

  • How long is the final flight into Bali, and how many flights a day are there on it?
  • Would the connection still work if the first flight were an hour late?
  • Are both flights on one ticket?
  • What local time do you land in Bali?

The last question matters most

The arrival time in Bali is easy to overlook while comparing hubs, and it decides what your first evening looks like. How the routing and the arrival hour feed into the first days of the trip is set out in the complete Bali trip guide.
